Applying for Citizenship- Requirements
U.S. citizenship, or naturalization, means you forfeit your country of origin’s citizenship. In order to do this, there are application requirements that foreign citizens must meet. While there are a few exceptions, in the majority of cases the person who is applying for citizenship must be a permanent resident. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a person may be eligible for citizenship if they:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have been a permanent resident for a certain amount of time (usually 5 years or 3 years, depending on how you obtained status)
- Are of good moral character
- Have a basic knowledge of U.S. government (Certain exceptions can be applied)
- Can prove a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States
- Read, write, and speak basic English (Certain exceptions can be applied)
